Adjustable gastric banding is a surgical, reversible method of limiting the amount of food you are able to ingest at one sitting. LAP-BAND® System and REALIZE® Band surgery allow Dr. David D. Kim to attach an elastic band filled with a saline solution around the upper portion of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. The result gives you a feeling of fullness much sooner after smaller portions of food. The saline solution in the band can be adjusted to create a larger stomach pouch to accommodate more food, or a smaller one to accommodate less. The band can also be removed altogether at any time.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, also known as VSG or gastric sleeve surgery, is a surgical weight loss procedure designed for patients who do not want the intestinal changes of gastric bypass surgery but also feel that Lap Band is not appropriate for them. The procedure involves the removal of about 70 percent of the stomach, while maintaining the openings into and out of the stomach. There are no intestinal changes that are made like gastric bypass. Ultimately, creating a stomach sleeve that holds less food than before, this can result in significant weight loss.

Candidates for weight loss surgery must be between the ages of 18 and 65 and be considered morbidly obese (a body mass index of 40 or more, 35 or more if suffering from comorbidities). Due to a recent decision by the FDA, patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, plus at least one severe health condition related to obesity, may qualify as candidates for the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure. This particular bariatric surgery technique is the only FDA-approved procedure for patients with a 30-35 BMI and at least one comorbidity condition. Candidates are often more than 60-80 pounds overweight and at risk for diseases and conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, and others brought on by severe obesity. Patients who are considering weight loss surgery must also maintain realistic goals for the procedure, and be prepared to undergo significant changes in lifestyle and eating habits to achieve the best results.

Since obesity surgery can be a procedure that dramatically improves a person’s health, many insurance companies offer some type of coverage for it. Your insurance policy and/or your provider’s representative should have details regarding your specific case, and one of our staff members can help you navigate your policy to find out if you are covered. Dr. David D. Kim understands the needs of patients for bringing weight loss surgery procedures into their budget. He offers a variety of payment and financing options that can help offset costs that may not be covered by insurance.
